I keep quiet when my daughter, Maggie, tells me she’s baking a sugar-free birthday cake for my five-year-old granddaughter. She’s reaching out to me for the first time in years, and I don’t want to muck things up. During the drive to the health food store in Bethesda, I tolerate her, “I can’t believe you smoked while you were pregnant,” tone while she lectures me on how sweets play havoc with the immune system.

My “Pick’n’ Save” back home looks pretty good compared to this place. But instead of asking Maggie why organic produce looks so mangy, and if all the employees are required to pierce their nostrils, I bite my tongue. Little Kaya and I follow her up and down the aisles in search of some magical artificial sweetener her acupuncturist recommended.

“Found it,” Maggie reaches for a rectangular box decorated with a drawing of a mint leaf. “This is the sweetener, Say-Lo; I remember the name because it sounds like…

John Simmons said "It’s a sensitive reading by Fiona Montgomery, matching the modulated gentleness of Michelle Brafman’s writing style. Beautifully captures the different yet related voices of the family characters."

Janet Rosemary Sadler said "A story very close to home. I have a fragile relationship with my daughter. I don't understand her, she says. Very true words! I have learnt not dwell on things said, developed a thicker skin, so barbed words bounce off. Very well written, didn't find characters confusing. I realized Hannah must be a friend, but perhaps you could of mentioned that. Liked the two different view points. I can remember having lots of strong opinions when I was young, they gradually were tempered or disappeared. I found your piece evocative and for me an emotional trip down memory lane."

Bernice Delucchi said "I loved this. especially the simplicity of the author's writing-style. Although at times I found myself having to re-read as suddenly a new character emerged."

Joseph Chamberlain said "The author's style of slipping in new names without explanation can be confusing and means the reader has to stop and think who they are and whether they are relevant to the plot. With regards to enjoyment, why do the friday stories always have to be so black? This was billed as amusing, but I didn't find it so. I feel too many authors are trying for 'real life' pieces."

Allan Forsyth said "I loved the juxtaposition of the mother and daughter's views of the same interactions. Helped me reflect on my own relationship with my children and understand more deeply the importance of love over analysis Thank you"

James Martin said "Intriguing story. The introduction says this story should be read by all mothers and daughters. I think fathers can get some traction from it, too. It helps me understand the significance I have on my sons, and helps me understand that we are all trying to shape the kids into what we think it best. My boys are young right now, but when they are older, we should read it together. --One comment about the writing is that I had to question and re-read a couple times because I was unclear about the identity of the character called Hannah."

Christine Human said "I enjoyed this story despite finding the situation between mother and daughter rather sad. The daughters determination to live her dream caused for some tense moments. The characterisation was believable and the ending appropriate. Thank you, I enjoyed it."

Bill Kirton said "Beautiful, sad and funny - A wonderfully sensitive piece of writing. The relationships are so subtle, the shifts so discreet and the poignancy of how mother and daughter teeter on the edge of hugging one another but manage to kill the instant by a wrong word or shift of emphasis is very touching. But I laughed too. And the reading is immaculate. Thanks."

Lucy Douglas said "Great writing - I found this poignant, rather than funny. It was SO well observed, it really brought home how many mother/daughters (and doubtless father/sons) mess up their relationships, and could so easily sort them but don't. A lovely piece of observation."

Susan Donim said "Mother and Daughter - A very well written funny story which captures the relationship between a mother and daughter perfectly. Jumps very well between two characters, with no confusion. I enjoyed reading this very much, a very sweet story."
