Lucas Heriot Cuddles gazed down at the little, picturesque village laid out before him. Red ivy and climbing roses wound their way up the cottage walls and into the thatch. The tender stems of cherry blossoms swayed gently in the breeze whilst the wheel of the small watermill creaked it's way around steadily, the water splashing happily into the stream below where frogs and sticklebacks played. Honeyford-by-water. Such a pleasantly innocent place on the surface. But Cuddles knew differently. He knew that something rotten and wretched lingered at the very heart of this village - he could feel it in his stuffing. The bear watched awhile longer before spitting out a gobful of tobacco and began making his way down. The time of reckoning was near.

Mrs Tillbury always enjoyed that point in the middle of the morning; when the day wasn't too hot yet and some of the early dew still glistened on the lawn outside. Mr Tillbury had left…

Rachel Marsh Guest Editor said "I adore this story for so many reasons, not least because it’s a good story that’s well written. The writing is clear yet paints an imaginative scene, and the story progresses quickly pushing the reader forward. But this story is also a favourite of mine because it’s layered. It takes the form of an old-fashioned fairy-tale, with silly names and personified animals. And, just like the Grimm’s stories (or even in a similar vein to the very contemporary reinventor of myth, Gregory Maguire) there’s more than cuddly bears and patriarchal beagles – there’s subtext. It starts with flowers and light and an idyllic village, but grows dark and sinister, representing something quite universal about humanity: jealousy, fear, and a need to over power others. This is a strange story but a smart one, and it is one of my favourite on ShortbreadStories."

Mags Hill said "Wow! Great story. Thoroughly enjoyed it. Very scary. It always amazes me how we all have such imaginations, and completely different from each other. Well done. Mags"

David Sharp replied saying "Cheers Mags! This is certainly one of my most "out there" tales - I wanted a cocktail of whimsical innocence and cruel foreboding."

Diane Dickson Guest Editor said "I'll never look at teddy bears in quite the same way again! This was really unusual and very gripping and so dark in parts. What a wonderful imagagination you have to build this whole world and people it with such fascinating characters. Thanks for this."

David Sharp replied saying "I did - on several occasions! For some reasons she never seemed to find this nearly as entertaining as I did though."

Diane Dickson Guest Editor replied saying "Did you tell your wife that her lovely little settler looked like the Witchfinder General?"

David Sharp replied saying "Really happy to hear you enjoyed this one so much Diane! The idea for the story came from a piece of stitchwork my wife was doing - it was supposed to be a bear dressed as an American settler (for thanksgiving) but just looked to me like the Witchfinder General. I loved the thought of something so innocent and gentle then being popped into such a horrific role."

Jay Leffew said "I have to agree with the last word uttered, but at least the result was true freedom, however drastic and unnecessary the initial investigation. Dark indeed, and dramatically written... I like 'whimsidark' best, even if the spell-checker doesn't..."

David Sharp replied saying "Glad you enjoyed this one Jay - wasn't sure how people would take to it. You might like to think our little community is free now but I don't think we've seen the last of Cuddles..."

David Sharp replied saying "Glad you enjoyed it Jon. It's definitely a mixture of genres this one - I propose creating a new genre to cover it though: "whimsidark". Or... I have heard "larkydarkywhimsy" tossed around as well."
