A nibble here, a taster there; a sip of sweet white wine,

then try a canape perhaps; a vol-au-vent divine...

Give me a chance to try some Schnapps, a scotch egg, or fish pate,

and dainty crustless sandwiches with a small cup of latte.

.

I don't know where to try some next; a gateau or a cake?

While deep inside me something says, 'Hold on for goodness sake!'

A cocktail sausage; two, no three; cheese, pineapple and cherry...

'Don't overdo the viands dear, - you'll end up far from merry...'

.

Too late I feel the swaying grip of vertigo and sickness.

I stagger to the ladie's loo, devoid of any quickness,

and there I waste the whole night's feast; I find I have a headache,

and sit and vow 'never again!' - 'til next party or 'breadbake'.

Andy Bottomley Guest Editor said "Been there, done that, even got the T-shirt!I It didn't bring back fond memories, but rather a recurring one. But Hey, we've all no doubt been there and it is good once in a while to be reminded of the fact. Thanks for this Jay, most enjoyable or should I say memorable!.....Andy"

Jay Leffew replied saying "Strange thing is it never happened to me. This was an exercise in imagining how it would be 'if...' and it was enough to stop me even going there! I attended one such party and left early, (with some of the goodies in my pocket for later), because I found the increasing bawdiness distasteful, and realised I simply wasn't enjoying myself, even with a couple of drinks inside me."

James McEwan said "Jay, sorry I meant, breaks the rhythm. I must remeber to read before I submit.. James."

James McEwan said "Hi Jay, Fun to read. I was wondering if this was relecting bulimia 'I don't know where to try some next; a gateau or a cake?' This line stumbles and breaks the rhyme, perhaps, 'what should I try, what next: a gateau or a cake?' Also I was thrown by the ladie's (you mean ladies') or did you go to the Lad's loo? Just little observational points, but I did enjoy the poetry break from short stories.. James.. Read more: Short Story: The Party | Shortbread"

Jay Leffew replied saying "Actually I can't see what you mean about the rhythm; yours seems less in keeping than mine in that instance, but I'm shocked at the 'ladies' ' - I wrote it correctly with paper and pen, and am always having to go back and retype letters that I've typed the wrong way round; - I'm such a stickler for this in others' writings, you got me! Thanks!"

James Tate said "Great fun (to read - not to experience). Who can't relate to this?"

Adam West Guest Editor said "You always seem to latch onto a rhythm in your poetry, Jay - that carries the reader forward on an even keel - a lot easier said that done - many thanks - I enjoyed this, Adam."

Jay Leffew said "Thanks Diane; it's an old one I found whilst going through my stuff, and thought it would give someone a laugh."

Diane Dickson Guest Editor said "Ha, I was just about to log off when this popped up and I stayed my digit. I'm glad I did because this gave me a grin. It was lovely simple poetry telling a familiar tale and very well done - Cheers (oops maybe not:-() Diane"
