THE FINAL AMNESIA OF PHILIP K. DICK

On the 33rd of February Philip K. Dick asked The Machine to provide him with a wife. He was nineteen years old now, he said, and it was about time he settled down. The Machine made the necessary connections and the face of Howard Hopwood appeared on the screen above the control desk where Phil sat. Hopwood was the Data Controller of Bride-by-Connection, and he was not pleased to see Phil at all.

“Not you again!” was his immediate response. “I see your credit with Amnesiacs hasn’t run out yet. Has it?” he leaned forward and his face suddenly became huge on the screen.

“I beg your pardon?” said Phil politely. “Amnesiacs?”

“Well, you’ve forgotten, naturally,” Hopwood replied irritably. “Just a moment,” he glanced aside, looking at something Phil couldn’t see. “So, Mr. Dick. You’re a Grade B Date Reviser, with aspirations to become a writer, and you’re seeking a lady of at least twenty, five feet…

Jan Krynski said "An enjoyable and well written tribute to a master, thanks. Its a long time since I read any PKD but surely the man himself would have enjoyed this too."

Steve Douglas replied saying "I hope so, even if he does end up living with an android. He did write 'Human is' on these lines..."

Jay Leffew said "The ending was great, and the whole concept just right, I adore a good sci. fi. and this really hit the spot, thanks."

Steve Douglas replied saying "Thanks Jay. I write mostly fantasy, but I enjoyed playing about with Dick's characters and speculations."

Diane Dickson Guest Editor said "I haven't read any PKD although I am aware that he is mentioned often and often in the comments and threads here. No matter I enjoyed this piece even though I have a gap in my education. I think it is a testament to the writing that I was able to enjoy it so much in spite of not being fully informed. Thanks for a great read - Diane"

Steve Douglas replied saying "PKD is best known as the author of Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep, later filmed as Blade Runner (to its detriment, in my admittedly minority view). Other novels you might start with are The Man in the High Castle or A Scanner Darkly - a very dark novel about drug abuse. Glad you liked the story - thanks!"

Adam West said "This morning I tried to tune into Radio Free Albemuth but could not get a signal - something to do with digital switch over I imagine, so , I logged into Shortbread instead and I am glad I did. Freeing Mr. Dick from the Empire and delivering unto him a perfect dark-haired girl is a stroke of genius, Steve - I am sure PKD would approve (I certainly do). I have a question though - before you wrote this did you Dream of Electric Sheep or did the Vast Active Living Information System beam this story directly into your brain via a pink light? If you made it up yourself you deserve the accolade of Dick- H***! Wonderful piece, chock with truly amazing PhilDickian moments - a triumph over the Black Iron prison and a vote for kindly Simulacra everywhere - Bravo!!"

Adam West replied saying "Not read We Can Build You - filling in the gaps in chronological order and still have a couple from the sixties to read. Thanks for the tip, though. Pris was also one of the androids in Blade Runner - was that also the character name in Do Androids...? I guess you will have read the short story The Black Box - which formed one strand of Do Androids... - but sadly was ommitted from the film. Hope Ridley's production company, given that they are making a mini-series, not a film, include every element/strand of Man in the High Castle."

Steve Douglas replied saying "Thanks Adam - I hoped you'd like it, since you're a PKD fan. It developed in bits and pieces. I sneaked things in from a variety of books - Pris, for example, was a character in We Can Build You, a lesser known work that I'd recommend if you've not read it already. And the short story he refers to is Human Is."
