The car crawled up the darkened driveway. I stopped just short of the house, switched off the engine and sat there listening to the steady tick-tick of the metal cooling in the night air.

I had the lock picked in seconds, feeling the tumblers click into place through my latex gloves. I moved through the hallway and up the stairs, careful to avoid potential trip hazards. The bedroom was at the end of the landing with its door lying half-open. I nudged it with my elbow and waited for a moment, assessing the room. A humped shape lay curled on one side of the double bed. I paused to check the safety on my silenced pistol before creeping over and pulling back the duvet. Bill Robertson said "Have ordered a copy of Ghostdog on your recommendation Adam - I'll let you know what I made of it when it arrives. I liked the notion in this story that the killer is almost bored by his job by this stage. I wrote him as very detached and then added the other section about his first target as a contrast of how numbed he had become."

Bill Robertson replied saying "Sounds like good stuff Adam. I'll let you know how I get on with it. You never know, it might spark another story!"

Adam West replied saying "Hope you enjoy it, Bill - it is undoubtedly a little different and one of those films arguably more enjoyable when you know the plot and on a subsequent viewing pick up on all manner of wrinkles you missed first time round. The characterisation with a story like The Cleaner or Ghostdog is very important if as a reader you are being asked to believe that this person kills for a living - clearly you gave this some thought and hence achieved a believable character - best wishes Adam"

Adam West said "I am a fan of hitman stories, many of which are US in origin - this felt quintessentially British and in the light of the David Kelly affair, as you mentioned, it certainly resonated. Sharp and clean as a knife straight from the dishwasher - nice writing Bill...many thanks Adam"

Bill Robertson replied saying "Heard of it but never seen it. Will have to check it out."

Adam West replied saying "Have you ever seen Ghostdog, Bill - great film commissioned by Film4? Forest Whittaker is just perfect as the hitman who follows the way of the Samurai and keeps pigeons!"

Bill Robertson replied saying "Thanks Adam. I really wanted to write a hitman story (had I used that title I could have put this in the Famous Freddies comp!) and the Kelly affair was very much in the air at the time so all the pieces fell into place quiet quickly."

Jay Leffew said "Brrrrilliant understatement... I think I need my warm coat round my shoulders now... Thanks."

Diane Dickson Guest Editor said "absolutely chilling. Even though this was spare on detail and background it was enough to carry the threat and the horror to the end - Very good - Diane"

Bill Robertson replied saying "Thank you Diane. I had been thinking about the David Kelly affair and it set the wheels in my head spinning."
