Short Story: Stanley Is Lost
Stanley is lost. A few minutes ago he was with all his friends and Master Dobnob walking in the woods.
When Master Dobnob takes his class of little dragons out he makes them walk in single file. He chooses one dragon to lead the way. This is a great honour and today the leading dragon is Cynthia. Then there is Tommy holding Cynthia’s tail with his paw. Then there is Charlie holding Tommy’s tail with his paw. Then Sally the little new dragon holding Charlie’s tail with her paw and then Stanley is holding Sally’s tail with his paw. Five little dragons in a line holding on to each other’s tails.
Mr Dobnob says that five little dragons is quite enough at one time thank you very much.
Stanley is a day-dreamy little dragon. When they learn about numbers he day-dreams about what number nine would look like upside down and whether number six would mind. If they learn about words he wonders if WHY minds being shorter than WHEN and if they are both a bit jealous of WHETHER. So, you see he is day-dreamy and a bit silly. He’s a very young dragon and so nobody minds.
He saw a butterfly. Well if you have a day-dreamy dragon and a beautiful blue butterfly anything can happen and today it had.
The butterfly landed plop on his nose. He felt her tiny little feet on his nose. He liked that. He crossed his eyes and could see her beautiful wings as she perched on his nose. He liked that.
The butterfly looked at his big dragon eyes and his long dragon nose and his shiny dragon scales and thought they were very lovely but then she flew away.
Stanley should have kept hold of Sally’s tail. He should have followed the crocodile of dragons but he didn’t. He ran off to follow the butterfly and now he is lost.
Stanley is crying great big dragon tears. They are big and round and because they are dragon tears they are full of rainbows.
“Why are you crying little dragon?”
Stanley looks up and there is the beautiful butterfly.
“I’m lost.”
“Oh dear.” The butterfly sits on Stanley’s nose. He likes that and so he stops crying.
“Are you with the crocodile of dragons and Mr Dobnob?”
“Yes but I don’t know where they are.” Stanley gives a big dragon sniff.
“They are by the pond counting water sprites. I’ll take you to them but please don’t sniff anymore because it’s rather unpleasant.”
The butterfly leads Stanley to the pond, his friends and Mr Dobnob. Mr Dobnob is magic Master of a school for dragons and knew where Stanley was all the time. He thought that it would be a good lesson for a day-dreamy, slightly silly dragon to have to ask a butterfly for help.
I don’t think it has done any good, Stanley is wondering if, when his wings grow they will be as beautiful as a butterfly’s.
