‘He left years ago,’ I told the young lad standing on my doorstep.

Jack’s eyes looked back at me from this stranger’s face and his mouth turned down at the corners in mirror image.

‘How long?’ he had my only-child’s voice too.

‘Twenty years,’ I said.

He handed me an envelope and walked away.

Once alone, I opened the package and cried. It contained photos of the lad from childhood to the present day. He’d been adopted out aged two.

‘Your father is in Broadmoor for slaughtering your mother,’ is what I didn’t tell my grandson. And I never will.

Jay Leffew said "I've just commented on another story and said, 'It's amazing what you can convey in a few words, isn't it?', or words to that effect. I've also enjoyed some pretty hilarious results from using the 100 tiles of a Scrabble-set. 100 words is an exercise I'd recommend everyone to try; - and the Scrabble is guaranteed to cheer a dismal day!"
