Nick did not write today.
Nick did not write yesterday.
Nick did not write the day before yesterday.
Nick is depressed.

Not only is Nick singing the Blues, he has already picked out a name for his backup singers: The Demons. Every writer is familiar with that group of head bangers – his face breaks into a grin ... the first of the day.

But singing the Blues is not easy when you are sitting on a sunny beach in Mexico ... in January.

Nick is trying, but there are so many things going against him:

* It does not help that his mornings start with a cup of coffee in the shade of a thatched roof near the water’s edge – buoyant fishing boats pushing out to sea – buoyant surfers pushing in from the sea – each filling the air with optimism.

* It does not help that the roving troubadour with the strumming guitar and the velvet voice brings so much gaiety to the table…

Linda Bond said "This was a clever way of introducing us to a place and life full of beauty and joy. I wonder if Nick succumbed to the reasons to be cheerful in his life or if he became an old grouch?!"

Jay Leffew said "Good on yer Ernie! We'd love to see more people commenting around here! What's with the 'Mexican'? It seemed to me you should've been writing 'Mexico', but maybe you really did mean he was being Mexican, and it just didn't come out right. I loved the laid-back feel of this though; the format looks like poetry and isn't, so I s'pose that's what you mean when you wonder where the paragraphs went, but it seems apposite somehow, so a happy accident if that's the case; loved it."

Bill Haddow-allen said "I liked it, too Ernie. It must be annoying trying to do a James Dean act when everything is just great and delicious! Funny."

Ernie Steinbeck replied saying "If I am going to hang around 'shortbread', I guess am going to have to learn to, both, give and receive comments. Thanks for your comments, Bill."

Diane Dickson Guest Editor replied saying "hello - I don't think I have any secret except that I always write my stuff in word and then copy and paste. I take Gary's advice and always save and close then have another look before I submit. Sometimes I need to fiddle about a bit but apart from that I don't know - do you write directly into the writing desk?? Although I still don't see how that would make a difference. Well, we always have the wonderful Fiona to leap to our rescue which she seems to do with unwavering patience. cheers Diane"

Ernie Steinbeck replied saying "Thanks, Diane -- kind words. P.S. I sure wish I knew your formatting secret of getting single-spaced lines with double-spaces between paragraphs."
