Jack closed the drawer of his desk, leaned back in his chair, stretched out his long legs and began the operation. Thinking time, he said to himself.

Ping! went the screen of his laptop.

From where Jack sat, with only the receptionist and the main door to his rear, almost the whole of the open-plan office was laid out before him in a wide arc. He had chosen that strategic location for his desk so that he could keep an eye on the staff and their comings and goings. As far as he was concerned, that ability to quietly survey all those people – his people in his empire– was what made everything worthwhile.

‘It gives me a great sense of achievement,’ he once confided to Neville, the company’s Chairman. ‘It’s what gets me up in the morning.’

Jay Leffew said "This story is particularly clever in not giving you a hint as to what's really going on until right at the end, and unless you are clairvoyant I challenge you to discern the mystery before then. It is funny, puzzling, and frustrating by turns, but one thing it does better than any story I've read yet, is hold you in amused suspense until it lets you have that pent up laugh in the last paragraph. It is a master class in mystery and humour, on a par with 'The Mousetrap' I think, (so don't go telling anyone will you?)."

Diane Dickson Guest Editor said "Oh my goodness - you read my letters didn't you. I worked for a company where there was absolutely no let up, work with your head down or else and my boss was so very much like your MC. The scary thing was the ping though - it wasn't the same ping but it was just as pingy :-)"

Brendan Gisby replied saying "Glad you liked it, Diane. And it's (nearly) all true!"

Adam West Guest Editor said "Quite original idea and very enjoyable for it. You certainly don't do things by halves, Brendan, when it comes to constructing a character - this egomaniacal, paranoid, obsessive was at once sad and annoying. Like Jay I was increasingly obsessed with Ping! but after a time I let it go by knowing like rubiks cube I was never going to fathom it out and would have to patient and wait to be told...many thanks for a novel story, Adam"

Brendan Gisby replied saying "Thank you, Adam. Writing it was made easier because the megalomaniac is a real person, who has actually gone on in the last few months to ruin that company and put everyone out of work. Like I said, all the best stories come from real life!"

Jay Leffew said "Great chuckle at the end, I was kept guessing all the way, until the staff started talking, and then 'Ping' I got it!"
