“What time is it?” she asks, her eyes wide, awaiting a reply......

.... then as she sips her tea I remember the first day we met.

It was Valentines Day and we both started teaching Primary school on the same day. I was besotted the moment I saw her. She was the most beautiful woman I had ever seen. She wore her long dark red hair pinned up, with wisps trailing down the sides of her beautiful face. Huge dark brown eyes sparkled when she spoke.

“Hi, I’m Anne Sturrock,” she said , holding out her slim hand.

“Harry Prentice” I said, feeling the softness of her palm in mine. I held on to it a little longer than I should, but I don’t think she noticed. During that day I could barely concentrate on my class and kept raising my hand to smell the faint traces of her perfume.

“Fancy a scone?” she shouted, following me from the building, and she tucked her hand…

Alex Mason said "I'm impressed that you've managed to cut this down from 1700 words! What is left is a real kernel of joy - a tour-de-force of images, an entire life time within 500 words! My one comment - although, after reading the piece, I understand why you've done it - I that the first line is simply not needed. I know, you are hinting at her dementia, but within 500 words the first line jarred - she asks the character what time it is, then he immediately talks about how they had met. I would remove this line completely and start straight from their meeting, which struck me as a much more effective opening."

Carol Ford replied saying "Hi Alex, I very much appreciate your comments and you are probably correct. I really don't think this story reads well in only 500 words anyway. I've sent the whole 1700 words to Andy and presume he has done away with himself..!! I welcome ALL comments so please keep them coming - I'm a big girl and can take it..!!"

Andy Bottomley Guest Editor said "Hi Carol, I see from the other comments that this piece was trimmed down from 1700 words. All I can say is thank goodness for that. If you packed as much heart rending stuff into those 1700 as you these 480 I don't think i would have survived! This really is a touching piece that touches I think the fears of many people when they look at the prospect of growing old with a loved one. Thank you for sharing it....... Andy"

Jay Leffew said "I hate cutting stories to fit, but it's a challenging exercise and you succeeded so well with this; I didn't want to do it with 'Arguments'; I'm lazy I guess, but when Fiona said it was almost twice as long as it should've been it was a real shock. Congratulations and good luck."
