I had taken to wandering the city streets late at night. Unable to sleep in this new and alien environment, with its serried rows of faceless houses, identical in their anonymity; its lumpen tower blocks of concrete and steel standing like sentinels against capitalism; its confined parks with their sickly trees gasping in the foetid air, I discovered by chance that darkness had transformed the suffocating labyrinth into a strange and magical otherworld whose possibilities seemed infinite.

I may have drifted a little, but always woke in the hours just before dawn to find proper sleep eluding me. I had arrived in July’s pasty heat, but by September the sun had lost its brooding menace and I was able to breathe again. The small room with its thick protecting walls felt suddenly less like a sanctuary and more like a cell. I left the bed to tell its tale of restless altercation, and donning a light coat over my pyjamas…

Kate Smart Guest Editor said "Editor's Pick - I can’t begin to describe how much I enjoyed this darkly atmospheric and very weird story of love and betrayal. It’s well written, gripping, complex and detailed, and to me has a definite touch of the Mervyn Peakes about it. The narration is superb and draws the listener in – I was right there, padding about in the darkness and the twittens with them. Ian Swann’s voice changes pitch subtly and wonderfully when he reads Mata’s dialogue, adding even more creepiness, and I felt he was completely in sympathy with the author. I can listen and listen again."

Diane Dickson Guest Editor said "Hi Gary, by that do you mean the lovely big button. If you do I have to say that I was using that last night when I was cut off half way through. I had tried to listen using the usual button with no success then the big button popped up apropos of nothing at all. I clicked that and was well into the story when it upped and headed off into the sunset. Hope this is of help. It had happened once before about three weeks ago and in the end I had given up."

Jay Leffew said "Funny, this keeps happening to my attempts at listening; anyone else had the problem? I've stopped trying to listen now; shame, because you can get on with other things with your hands free..."

Gary Duncan Admin replied saying "Hello Jay & Diane. Very strange - we will look into this as soon as possible. In the meantime there is now a direct link to listen to the MP3 online which should do the trick. You can find this under the audio player."

Diane Dickson Guest Editor replied saying "I had this problem last time but thought it was a temporary glitch with my machine now I realise that maybe it's something we should bring to Gary's attention"

Diane Dickson Guest Editor said "I did manage to listen to about half of this and then it cut out suddenly. Of course by then I was hooked and read to the end and it was of course wonderful. I don't often listen to the stories, I love audio stories and limit them for fear that I may tire of being read to. A bit disappointing that this time it didn't quite work but nevertheless that takes nothing from the excellent writing. - Diane"

Patsy R Liles replied saying "I have read. Word for word. It is so filled with love, dark as the ambience may be. And so typical of that devil curiosity that lurks in us all. Very fitting for audio, I would imagine. Patsy R Liles"

Jay Leffew said "Curiosity is a killer right enough, never mind the cat! Oh dear... still, at least Mata could go on enjoying herself once she'd got over it, and that should mitigate his loss a bit, eh?"

Susan Donim said "Great Audio - I really enjoyed the audio version of this, the narrator had an unusual voice which suited the story perfectly. Really interesting story."

Kenny Soward said "Interesting - Interesting piece. The crustacean analogy at the end was simultaneously funny and a bit sad. It's too bad their friendship had to end. "
