There was a jingling of bells. It couldn't be, could it? Christmas was still a week away, I must be dreaming. I strained my ears to listen for the jingling. I must have fallen asleep. In the morning I hurried, thinking I might manage to look around on my way to school and find the source of the bells.
As I grabbed my coat I had a quick look around, the sound had come from over by the trees, near the little red post box.
I put my stuff in my bag, and pulled on my coat. A quick glance in the mirror revealed two faces looking back at me. I loved my new hat, it was a little racoon face sitting on my head, I felt like I had a little friend on my head looking out for me. Like my own 'demon' from 'The Golden Compass'.

Short Story: Jingle, Jingle Little Elf
I ran down the path, it wasn't slippy but there was evidence of fresh snow…..and then I saw it…..peeping out of the snow was a little shiny silver bell. I picked it up. I gave it a shake and sure enough it made the sound I had heard during the night.
'Put that back, put that back just where you found it!' snapped a little voice.
'Why, do you need help?' I gasped.
'I lost my way and I need my bell back on my cap to help me to find the others' came the reply.
'Come and let me see you and I will try to help you' I whispered.
'You have a lovely hat, I like the little face on it' said the elf who now stood beside me.
'Thank you, but I don't have a bell' we both laughed.
'Where have you come from? I heard the sound of bells during the night, you have been here for a while'.
'I am one of Santa's helpers and I am late, I got left behind because my bell fell off. Once it is sewn on again the others will find me, the bell is magical so I don't know how you heard it, it is only the little folk with super powers that can hear it usually'. Just then he stopped and laughed.
'What is it'? I enquired.
'The little racoon on your hat, he just winked at me, that is how you heard the bells, your hat is magical too'. Ha ha I thought, the hat was cute but magical? However I had finished sewing on the bell. The elf popped into my bag and we returned to the trees.
'I shall be fine from here, you have been very kind' and with that the elf disappeared.
Christmas morning came and I decided to go out for a walk. I put on my hat and checked myself in the mirror. Not only was there a racoon staring at me but somehow it had a bell on the top too and.......I am sure it winked at me!
Happy Christmas.
