At ten years old 3'4" was not an ideal height, and Jasper despaired of ever getting Jasmine to take him seriously at school.

He leaned his elbows on his bedroom window-sill and gazed down at the fox, standing motionless in the middle of a frosted, moonlit lawn, staring back at him for a minute or so before disappearing under the back of their woodshed.

Jasper?" seconds later his bedroom light flicked on and his mum was framed in the doorway, "Why aren't you asleep? It's nearly midnight!"

'Because,' he thought to himself, 'I'm scared of the kids you've invited to my party tomorrow!' but he said nothing.

"I expect you're excited about your birthday, but you really need to get some sleep Baby." and she kissed his forehead.

'Baby!' he scowled silently.

A look of understanding crossed his mother's face, "I must remember to stop calling you that; - I'm sorry sweetheart. Now, will you get back into bed, - please?"

As Jasper hugged her, and…

Jay Leffew replied saying "Thanks Bill; not a Summer story exactly, but I liked that one too, in fact I had wondered if it would be the one to be 'audioed', when I earned that honour coming second in one of the competitions; - that was months ago and nothing seems to've happened on that front - yet..."

Ahmed-hamid Woody Bagala-alina said "Though familiar with the concept, Africans are generally un-Santaic, if you know what I mean. We receive our gifts from our parents or older siblings and that`s that...no reindeers or carts, but we are fast catching up with the custom, especially in educated families. But I enjoyed this short tremendously and, (wait for it!), much as I prefer shorter shorts, wanted this one to go on a little bit longer. Great write here, Jay. Bless!"

Richard Ardus said "Hi Jay! Re the length of your story: the word count at Shortbread is out; I had the same surprise with my last 500 entry and Fiona verified the problem. I enjoyed your tale, nicely told. Just one quibble - "...if you'd like to, Santa could do with your help?" Is this genuinely a question or just that really irritating, modern 'up-speak' or whatever it's called, where the enquiry is formed by raising the pitch of the voice at the end of the sentence?"

Jay Leffew replied saying "The original question was, '...we've been longing to meet you properly, and wondered if you'd like to come and meet everyone? I know Santa would love your help, now you're old enough, but that's not important. All children need to see, to remind them of the magic of Christmas.' - Cutting it down to the bone rather spoiled it, but make of it what you will."

Jay Leffew said "Curses! I pared this to the bone, until my word-count registered 504, so, subtracting the title... - and here it tells me I had another 21 words in hand! What's going on?"

Jay Leffew replied saying "Thank you Meg. I don't think it stands a hoot against Diane's 'Dragon for sale' though..."
