I slip up the backstairs. I’m no stranger here but I tread softly, find your room, slip in like a shadow, sit on your bed and lay one red rose against your cheek. Dylan murmurs in the background. He is the soundtrack of our life together. Remember how we ‘sat together in the park as the evening sky drew dark’ – you looked at me and I felt a spark tingle to my bones. That’s a ‘Simple Twist of Fate’, isn’t it? That’s what you said life is, just simple twists of fate, and I said, no, life’s what happens to you when you’re busy making other plans.

Bubobubo Bubez said "At first I wondered if the narrator was a ghost (maybe I don't pay enough attention to the details, ahem) but was pleasantly surprised to find that the story was coming from this side and was the opposite of what I had been thinking. Nice to have been fooled after the loving, soothing softness of all the words of tenderness, though a very sad ending."

JP Creton replied saying "I'd never really considered the narrator might be a ghost but I can see how that fits until you get very near the end. What I was trying to do was see how far I could string the reader along without alterting him to the fact that 'something was up'... but I do like your interpretation. Thanks for taking the time to comment. Cheers - JP"

JP Creton replied saying "Thanks, Diane... I'm not sure if it qualifies as romantic in the Valentine's sense but it was an idea that grabbed me and wouldn't let go until I got something down on paper. Your reaction confirms that it has been worth the effort. Cheers, JP"
