Magic Mushroom, haze or daze, - swinging through your mind or maze;

Magic love, mush in a room - a room for mush is a mushroom.

Give me air, be fair, fair hair, - a magic comb grows through a pair

of magic shoes which lose, through booze, - some definition; drunken ooze.

In dreams of screams, of myriad gleams, - I float half dead from magic creams

and drown, go down to the abyss - of mind's enchantment, wildness, bliss.

A lovely torture; dreadful, haunting, - opening my eyes to daunting

harr'wing scenes, so dark, obscene, - yet compels, draws me between

an overwhelming, sleeping capture, - magic, tragic, lost to rapture

through an artificial agent, - born of nature's own contagent...

Opium, Cannabis, Heroin, Morphine, - Spirit, gambling, Hell's endorphine;

help a sorry soul from dying - Mushroom, Hushroom, deathly sighing.

Magic death, or tragic madness; - wasted life, infinite sadness;

Magic Hushroom rest in peace; - a coffin gone where life must cease...

Jay Leffew said "Strangely it didn't start out that way. The initial idea was a Mush Room, and what you'd do in it, but after only a few lines I saw the connections, and the rest took over, with a couple of tweaks to the beginning. I'm really glad I've never even been tempted to try, 'though I took a puff of one of mum's stub-ends when I was about ten, and was so disgusted I couldn't understand how anyone could even think of wanting them; I realised when I was well into my twenties that I'd probably got a puff of filter..."

Adam West Guest Editor said "Superbly inventive look at mind-altering substances. Magic mushrooms, oddly, were not so long ago uncategorised - then went to srtright in as category A, which is entirely at odds with their 'harm factor', which barely registers at all and is light years away from the damage done by tobacco and alcohol. The sentiments, here, generally however, on wasted life, will resonate with anyone closely affected by drugs abuse - one of your best pieces of short writing/poetry...many thanks Adam"
