About this Short Story
Written by
Jay Leffew
I don't know why travel never grabbed me, as it seems to enthuse others. I never felt the desire to 'know' other cultures, to experience the sights and sounds for real. I remember there was a very different smell of spiciness to the air as I stepped off the 'plane in Morocco, yet I cannot feel that I might be considered lacking had I missed that experience. It was my mum who had the wanderlust, and, apart from Morocco, (which was purely for a tan, and to discover if I could make it on my own), all the places I've visited were with mum, or as a coach-driver.

Faraway places? I've been to a few, in my mind, in my dreams; fantasy.
I've been to Morocco, my tan to renew, and France, on a day-trip to see
the culture, and taste some cuisine, as a child, and Holland took three days in all.
.
That last was the pits, smelling other folks' sick on the trip on the boat, there and back.
It just wasn't worth it; the trip wasn't quick, and hour after hour 'in the sack'.
The boat rocked and rolled; all night it went wild, yet I kept my food down with the gall.
.
I've been to the Isle of Wight; seen Black Gang Chine, but honestly don't feel enriched
by the mem'ries of any of these; - I don't pine, as others may think, to be ditched

In my mind I fly further than Tensing could roam; in my dreams I am cosmic'ly free,
'though my body now stays firmly ensconced at home, my imagination just transports me,
and I write down my fantasies, or paint is piled into murals I paint on my wall.
.
It's lazy perhaps, but I watch the telly, where vast lands and seas are explored
by the active and strong, who have more 'welly' than ever I had, when I toured.
These, for me, are adventure enough, and they're filed in my memories for my recall.
