John stared out of the bars of the jail, his handsome face consumed with regret, yet somehow conveying hope as he turned to watched me sit down.

"Why did you kill her?" I asked.

"I didn't mean to, -" he answered softly, lowering his eyes, "- she was laughing at me, so I punched her."

I raised my eyebrows, "Punched her!?"

"Well there's more to it than that..."

"...of course..." my sarcastic side was showing.

"She was trying to throttle me with my tie; -" he ignored me, "- Sybil was a bit strange sometimes, and I went along with it in the heat of the moment; - if you know what I mean?" I'd heard of this and lowered my own eyes, not wanting to admit I had. "I was blacking out, so I punched her."

I gazed at him then, and realised there were tears in his eyes.

"Thank you for being a good friend," he said, "I'm afraid I'm falling in love with you; -…
