The distant hum of unceasing lights of the supermarket matched his numbness. Unaware of the items in his trolley. Pushing it being beyond automatic. The aisles endless, demonic symmetry. The milk was white. The butter was yellow. The music playing over the speaker was generic.
He was getting closer to the checkout.
He had to go to the sweets section, he needed to buy sweets for the school lunchboxes. The sweets were like sweets, multicoloured and happy looking.
He was getting closer to the checkout now.
He had almost forgot to pick up a copy of Hello! magazine for his wife. The magazine was filled with people richer than him.
On his way to the checkout he spotted a set of screwdrivers. He needed a set of screwdrivers. The sign above them said great value. Beside the checkout was a selection of chewing gum, he needed chewing gum. The handing over of money and tacking back of change was the most automatic part of the…

Out in the car park, he was done with the shopping, at least for this week, possibly.
