Sucking his teeth, he gave me a sidelong glance.

Maybe I hated him before, but this really confirmed it, and to think I thought I was ever in love with him, what was it, - three months ago?

The charm offensive. I mean, I don't think I'm that naive; he's just such a good actor, tears, the lot, but I'm seeing a new side to him now, aren't I? I genuinely believed in his love for me. Now my own devotion is like the ash from nuclear fall-out; - it's eating away at my vitals.

"You fairy!" he sneered, "What's with the stupid bandanna?"

I lowered my eyes and blushed.

"Red and yellow? I mean talk about tasteless!" he continued, "You look like a flag! - Is that the idea; put an 'l' in fag?"

I wasn't going to cry, but I couldn't help my cheeks and neck flaming. "What did I ever do to you?" I wavered at last, wishing I could've sounded stronger.

"Do?" he…

Richard Ardus said "Jay, interesting that you should choose to write from that viewpoint. I have hang-ups about writing from an imagined perspective such as in this piece but that's probably a legacy of a left wing, 1980's, polytechnic education - ideas of authenticity and committment etc. You captured the peaks and troughs of a volatile relationship - though there's no way of knowing what's meant and what's shouted in the heat of the moment; will they be at each other's throats a week later..? Congratulations on being voted a top, top shortbreader, much deserved for your committment to the cause!"

Jay Leffew replied saying "Probably; it's that kind of relationship. Thanks - I still can't believe it, but maybe there weren't that many to choose from, 'though I can think of eight regular commenters."

Andy Bottomley Guest Editor said "Mmmm...not sure about this one Jay - but if I'm honest that maybe purely because I'm not sure that I could tackle this particular subject with either understanding or objectivity. As to the quality of your writing, well, that as usual goes unquestioned. One question I have however is, did you set out to write this story or did this story develop into what it is through the writing of it? I ask out of interest really because I find that my darker or more challenging pieces tend to come about not through design but by evolution, which I guess is the freedom of the imagination at work.....Andy"

Jay Leffew replied saying "You have an idea of sorts in your head, don't you? Then as you write the thoughts split and writhe into all sorts of possibilities, and you have to choose, each choice taking you into further choices down the line, and in the end I chose a kinder end than the one I began with. . . . . As to the quality of my writing, I think it could do with some criticism it doesn't get sometimes, but I'm glad to say it does get picked up on most of the time. Thank you all for your comments, glad you appreciated this one."

Heidi-jo Swain said "I'm with Adam on with this one - the threat of violence always just bubbling away under the surface - nicely done! Thank you."

Diane Dickson Guest Editor said "Oh how nasty we can all be can't we. The distress was palpable and do you know I wasn't convinced that this truly was the end of it at the end if you know what I mean. There were a couple of sneaky little word plays in here that raised a wry smile from this reader. Thanks - Diane"

Adam West said "I was holding my breath for most of this - the threat of violence was palpable - some lovely phrasing, Jay, in amongst striking imagery - many thanks, Adam."
