She opened the letter.

As soon as she felt that pleasurable ripping of the envelope giving way to the blade, Kathy realised what she would have known before had she not been blinded by suspicion; that she might be making a mistake. She felt the stab of guilt. She’d split their trust with a dagger; severed bonds; felt a kind of disjoining.

She sat at the polished table with the slit envelope in her fingers, at arm’s length - disowning it. She drummed on the table lightly with the corner of the envelope, worrying about the consequences. I will have to throw the letter away - I will know something he can never know I know.

An hour ago she and Tom had breakfasted here. They had touched hands across the toast rack, had flirted with the freshness and excitement of strangers; a game he loved to play.

Oh come on, Kathy! Get hold of yourself, it’s probably something ordinary and innocent. But… he…

Patsy R Liles said "I almost becae impatient with her to get on and read the darned letter. If she was that snoopy, she needed to get the full impact of it. In the end, the letter was the revenge of Chris, was it not? Full of good writing, this story has pull and punch. Good job. Now we will always wonder what would have happened had she not read it! -Patsy"

Christine Human said "I rather guessed the end ,maybe Chrisopher should have appeared a little earlier or maybe I'm just a suspicous person. Maybe the clues , the sex in the kitchen , the shared connection with the car . Were you teasing me? Some lovely phrases , tapping the envelope , flower scented stillness."

Adam West said "Some excellent phrases lifted this story out of the ordinariness it could so easily have been. In particular I enjoyed...... Holding the single pastel coloured sheet, she looked around the room, at the familiar friendly things which now felt unfriendly, even hostile, that had absorbed the sounds and thoughts of the room into their screaming muteness.... nicely judged writing...many thanks, Adam"

Bill Haddow-allen said "Thanks for reading, Jay, and for the observation '...why such a person would suddenly risk a letter...' It occurred to me, too. Perhaps a torpedo to sink the ship?"

Jay Leffew said "Written in a way to suggest how the mind roils around a problem, so the repetitive aspect reflects the thoughts. One has to consider why such a person would suddenly risk a letter, after so much secrecy? I'm surprised 'she' didn't think of that."

Bill Haddow-allen said "Thanks, Diane. Glad you liked it. I heard the first line somewhere and it set me thinking. The punctuation at the beginning seems to have gone awry in the transfer. Must amend."

Diane Dickson Guest Editor said "so many thoughts paraded through my head as I read this. One was why didn't she steam it, of course there was the pursed lipped one that said she shouldn't look anyway, there was the exasperated one that, like her mother, just wanted her to get a grip but most of all there was the amazed one when I read the ending - Didn't see that coming - Thanks for a really great read which was beautifully put together. - Diane"
