The top strand of the barbed-wire fence was rusty and rough, sharp to the touch. She shortened her arm inside the sleeve of her anorak, an old pink thing of her daughter’s, adequate enough for the quick nip this walk was supposed to have been when she’d set off. Pulling the knitted cuff down for a pad to protect her fingers, she pushed on the wire, rising as high as she could, willing her legs to be longer, longer, just a bit longer to let her step over. It was getting late. Dusk was coming. She needed this shortcut or goodness knows where she’d wind up. Her arm shot out of the sleeve. Eliza Langland replied saying "Dear Jon, Your regret is my story's gain - to receive such an affirmation on the last day of the year. May I simply reply with a sincere thank-you and wish you a new year full of realised goals and much accomplishment for yourself. I perhaps should direct you to the website of a new short story publisher who has published no less than three anthologies since May this year. I am published in the latest and he'll be looking for submissions soon for the next - he works fast! http://www.dualitythebook.co.uk/home Eliza. with thanks again. x"

Mark Patrick said "Wonderful imagery throughout. The story worked so well because the reader can feel the dirt, the wet, and the darkness. Also, the flashes of a character's thoughts/imagination can be distracting in most stories, but it was very effective here adding the element of hopelessness. Thanks - Mark"
