Toby cleaned the mark off the window pane, after crushing the fly.

He detested flies; wasps too. They were the bane of his life.

Looking down, he saw Anthea in her patch of garden next door. She was planting seed deep into the soil. There was something he’d like to plant in her. But it wasn’t in the plan.

Two Christmas’s past they’d shared a drunken fumble. It went no further. She respected him. He didn’t respect himself for what he felt like doing. Too late now. It was all a question of timing.

He had never been good with timing.

Ali was late. The job took up her life, and by extension, his life too. It was another thing he detested about the way their relationship had been allowed to drift.

Caught on the rebound, Ali had cared enough to stick around. And he was easy prey at the time. A desperate man in search of…
