Guest Editor: Rosamunde Pilcher
Published 1 year ago
I am honoured to be invited to be the Guest Editor on Shortbread, but at the same time a little overwhelmed. For years, when my children were small, I wrote nothing but short stories, but I had never been an editor. On the other hand, I always held them in great respect, never argued with their opinions (after all, they had been in the business far longer than myself, and presumably, knew a great deal more than I did about what would sell and what wouldn’t.) Obediently, I did what they asked of me, tweaked an ending or pruned assiduously at unnecessary adverbs and adjectives, rather as though I was cutting back a rampant climber.
My compliance paid off and produced an endless stream of short stories which were published by the many women’s magazines of that time, and which all ran copious fiction.
A couple of years ago, when Shortbread started up, I wrote about these years, and the start of my career. At that time, there were about 20 contributors to the website. Now, gratifyingly, this number has grow to about 400 authors from all over the world, breaking into a difficult market and thereby gaining experience, knowledge and confidence.
Thank you, Shortbread, for inviting a novice to be your Editor for a month.
