| Life Story: | Writing on Shortbread. My best writing on here is probably The Journey. Pigeon Coit is a close second. Afraid to Speak is worth a try if you like weird crime/supernatural combo's. Mary Rankin and the Great Inundation and Josiah Blacknell and the Blockade Runners are well researched. Mr. Zimmerman Flies to Buenos Aires (Economy Class) is frankly, off the wall, or 'trippy' if you prefer - Hey Dog bitter-sweet. Of the eight stories I rescued from my last full-length manuscript and adapted for Shortbread which include Donstown Pt 1 and 2, Hintleman's Unorthodox Bi-Lateral Sclerosis (I love crazy story titles)...and all the Victor stories, I like Victor and the Door-to Door Pedlars best, with Victor's Friend Joe Carter coming next best. For a short sci-fi read, my competition entries Love on an Alphane Moon and Do Eros Sevens Dream of Jupiter and Mars are worth a look, especially if you like PK Dick tribute acts. Both the contemporary, Everything Happens for a Reason, and the Greek tragedy, Some Velvet Morning are a little risque. Walking Not Swimming, is, one SBS member suggested, Mark Twain-esque (a lovely compliment thank you). On Runswick Bay Beach is an Orwellian-like essay. Halfway House is a true story whereas The Tuppenny Rush is a conversation based upon real events. Dormant is not Dead, ‘Cause I Just Looked Inside My Head and No Haze in Death are, surprise surprise, self-indulgent pieces. X is for Xenotropic is a lengthy saga spanning many centuries with a deft nod to Kurt Vonnegut - and is, what I describe as, a ’literary’ equivalent of Russian Dolls: a story within a story within a story. Out of Time is a Great War poem of sorts. Daisy Chains and Black Dahlias, and the George P Pelecanos inspired They Find Me Down By The River graphic crime noir. In contrast, Cheryl Cole versus Katy Perry and The Honeymooners are quite frivolous. Fat Tuesday won a little comp on here and gave someone a headache, too! Reading on Shortbread. I prioritise reading stories by writers who read and comment on other stories, followed by those who read but don't comment and lastly, if I'm feeling charitable, :-) I read stories by writers who neither comment nor read on Shortbread. PS - I don't use the ratings slider bars - preferring to comment/critique member's writing. |
