Deanna Westwood said of her experience at ShortbreadStories in Spain 2011:
‘There was enough structure for us to learn, but plenty of freedom to be creative in a stunning, inspiring environment. Then this was all knitted together with sharing our work and constructive, positive feedback. I hadn’t even been able to scribble down the first word of my novel, but after three days with the group have got those difficult opening paragraphs out of the way and my little cart has trundled round to the lip of the rollercoaster and is about to drop for one hell of a ride! It was four days of talking about writing, words, literature, film, just pure creativity, even our evening games were creative – charades, or ghost stories by the pool which, um… descended into madness.
Rachel let us run and then reigned us in, always keeping us on track. This resulted in some amazing stories being poured onto paper.
This was a fantastic opportunity and I will be forever grateful to Shortbread for making it possible, to Robin and Kirsty Pilcher for their warm hospitality and the extra laughs, and to Rachel for getting me started.’
